Las Vegas has staged the world’s largest bikini parade in a bid to revive the city’s flagging visitor numbers.

The occasion marked the 50th anniversary of the building iconic “Welcome to Las Vegas” neon sign and according to the city’s mayor, Oscar Goodman, the start of summer on the Strip – a month ahead of other northern hemisphere destinations.
The publicity stunt, which saw around 300 bikini-clad women parade down The Strip, will do little to improve the city’s reputation for a lack of political correctness (women were asked to send in a photo along with their hip, waist and bust measurements, before participation could be approved) but plenty to publicise the city’s famous pool party scene.
It was followed by a swimwear retrospective, hosted by Holly Madison of the reality television programme Girl of the Playboy Mansion, featuring a catwalk show of bathing suits from the fifties to the present day.
The city has been struggled in recent months to attract visitors due to the economic downturn.

Visitor numbers are down nearly ten per cent on last year, while the major casinos earned 17 per cent less from gamblers in the first three months of this year, compared to the same period in 2008, according to Nevada regulators.
As a result the city is keen to stress that if offers more than just the traditional glitz, glamour and gambling of the Strip, focusing on everything from gastronomy and golf to culture, spas and now pool parties to try and widen city’s appeal.
“Las Vegas has an incredibly unique and vibrant pool culture that is unlike any other in the world,” said Cathy Tull, Senior Vice President of Marketing for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of visiting St. Louis, Missouri, USA, for the first time to adjudicate The Tan Company’s attempt at the Guinness World Records mark for Largest bikini parade on 1 May.

Everything appeared set for a broken record: a well-known organizer (The Tan Company has tanning salon locations in 14 states from Florida to California), an iconic city full of potential participants (St. Louis is one of America’s 20 most populous urban areas) and a Saturday afternoon with temperatures reaching 25.5° C (78° F).

Unfortunately, severe thunderstorms hit St. Louis the night before the record attempt, prompting the USA’s National Weather Service to even issue a tornado warning. With weather obviously a factor, The Tan Company could not muster enough participants to topple the record 287 set by Kellogg’s Special K in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 7 November 2009.

Those that did show up, though, seemed to have a great time. And why wouldn’t they at an event that included more than $30,000 (£19,868) in cosmetic procedure prizes and free spray tans on site?

One of the highlights for me personally was having the chance to snap a photo with a pair of NFL cheerleaders (below), these from the local St. Louis Rams.

But there was fun to be had by all and some of the best moments of the day actually came from those that couldn’t even technically partake in the record: men! Because a bikini is by definition a woman’s two-piece bathing suit, men dressed in bikinis could participate in the parade but would not count toward any record-breaking total.

That didn’t stop a couple of enterprising gentleman from trying to pull off the look, though.
